Run report #13 West Coast Park parkrun

It was the week of 3's this week.  We passed the milestone of 300 individual parkrunners running at West Coast Park parkrun, 312 in total so far.  This was event #13 and we had 23 new Personal Bests out of a field of 58 runners, of whom 16 were first timers.  Another 3 Age Category Records for West Coast Park parkrun were broken this week and to top it off we also had 3 volunteers help out at the last moment when we were short of volunteers.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, it is great to see so many first timers every week, so continue to spread the parkrun message, generally people hear about parkrun through word of mouth.

Did you know that parkrun publishes a top 500 finishes per parkrun so since we have less than 500 still, you will be able to see where you currently rank against all the people that have ever run West Coast Park parkrun.  So if you want to look it up you can find it here http://www.parkrun.sg/westcoastpark/results/fastest500/

We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Agnieszka Banas, Jin-Kai Chng, Creighton Connolly, Bradley Cronje, Naomi Dawson, Nigel Dawson, Allison Singer, Yuichi Suga.

The 3 Age Category Records for West Coast Park parkrun this week were:

  • VW40-44 Tanja DE JONGHE 22:19
  • VW35-39 Hannah ROBERTS 21:38
  • JM11-14 Taichi YAMASHITA 19:57

You can see the full list of age-category records at http://www.parkrun.sg/westcoastpark/results/agecategoryrecords/ .

Five IMPORTANT things to tell potential first timers among your friends:

  1. Register and print off a barcode a day or two before your first event. No barcode unfortunately means no time will be recorded.
  2. Stick to the left of the path during the event and be mindful of other path users.
  3. All parkrunners volunteer. Parkrun relies on volunteers to stage each event.
  4. Have fun. You are only competing against yourself. Everyone's a winner at parkrun.
  5. .... and don't forget to bring your PRINTED barcode !!

Run report #12 West Coast Park parkrun

As the safety of our parkrunners and other park users is our main responsibility I wanted to start this run report with a word of caution.  This week we had a collision between a parkrunner and a bicycle, unfortunately this is our second similar incident.  Neither party was at fault or seriously injured, but a word of caution to please be very aware of other people in the park especially bicycles.  Please note that all under 11s must be within arm's reach of a parent, guardian or other designated adult of the parents' choice. This is an insurance requirement and is unfortunately a non-negotiable rule.

Now onto the brighter highlights.  We had an excellent turnout of 81 runners, of whom 21 were first timers and an incredible 34 recorded new Personal Bests.  I was lucky to be marshalling on the course this week so thank you to all the high fives and thanks I got from all the parkrunners, the appreciation shown to myself as a volunteer puts a spring in your step for the rest of the day.  Thanks to the rest of the Agnieszka Banas, Jerome Besnaud, Naomi Dawson, Pablo Diago, Sebastian Lambert, Kate Rees-McIntyre, Anand Thiagarajan.

Four records toppled this week. Well done to:

Volunteering

Volunteering is part of parkrun. We would love to see new faces helping out. We still need more volunteers to step forward for our next events so please consider helping us out in order to make West Coast Park parkrun a success. Everyone who volunteers gets a terrific buzz from being part of an instant team working like clockwork to bring a parkrun to life. Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow parkrunners. There are two ways to indicate your intention to volunteer in coming weeks. First, you can approach any of our volunteers with orange bibs at the start/finish area and we will write down your details in our register. Alternatively, you can check out the http://www.parkrun.sg/Westcoastpark/futureroster/ on the West Coast Park parkrun website and then send an email to Westcoastparkoffice@parkrun.com with the dates you can help out and any preference you have for a volunteering role.

Run report #11 West Coast Park parkrun

Well I was going to say East Coast Park parkrun pipped us 56-54 (with no shady padding of their numbers ;) ), but then they pulled out the big guns.  For those that missed it, have a read of their race report and I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.  Having reflected a bit on this over the last few days, the one thing that stands out for me is an admiration for Singapore.  How many countries in the world do you still find esteemed public figures taking an active interest in their communities without it being staged or a photo opportunity, just a genuine interest and inquiry?  This is great for parkrun to help spread the message of a free weekly timed 5km run open to the public, to promote community-building and a healthier lifestyle. So please share if you agree.  http://www.parkrun.sg/eastcoastpark/news/2017/02/12/run-report-137-east-coast-park-parkrun-11-02-2017/

This week there were 54 runners, of whom 17 were first timers and 21 recorded new Personal Bests.

Thank you to the parkrunner that paid our volunteers a lovely compliment this week. "Having the marshals on the course enthusiastically cheering us on, really helped to lift our spirits and give us a boost."  Thanks to all this week's volunteers Agnieszka Banas, Conor Delahunty, Creighton Connolly, Gordon Hirons, Linda Hancock, Lorena Ferreira, Patricia Sanz, Simon Watkinson and Xavier Hamonic.

Another three more records toppling this week. Well done to:

  • VW40-44 Yan Wang 22:34
  • VM50-54 Russell Waugh 20:26
  • VM35-39 Pablo DIAGO 17:41

You can see the full list of age-category records at http://www.parkrun.sg/westcoastpark/results/agecategoryrecords/ .

Sharing West Coast Park with Friends

Runners, walkers, dogs, and cyclists all share the marvellous paths at West Coast Park and surrounds. Ensure you stay to the left and be courteous to other users of this beautiful park.

Water

A reminder that there are no water fountains at West Coast Park in close vicinity to the start. Please bring your own water bottle to store at the meeting point which can be refilled at the toilet block or bring some change to use the vending machine there.

Training Tip

Pre run, incorporate some dynamic stretches such as legs swings and walking lunges to loosen your muscles and warm the body. Adding 5-6 100m running strides along the paths at the start will also have you in tip top shape for your 5km parkrun.

PLEASE Bring Your PRINTED Barcode: NO barcode = NO result = NO EXCEPTIONS.

Please bring PRINTED barcodes only as unfortunately barcodes on mobile phones cannot be scanned so will not be accepted. Printed barcodes are used at all our events to record your result.

Run report #10 West Coast Park parkrun 04.02.2017

There were 57 runners at West Coast Park parkrun this week, which just happened to be exactly the same as East Coast Park parkrun.  The reason I happen to know this is that I helped out on Saturday at ECP parkrun.  I was well behaved though and didn't tell them that "West is best" as part of my ECP run briefing, although I may have let this slip a few times at coffee afterwards.  It is pleasing to see our young parkrun growing and still attracting newcomers; this week we had 21 first timers and 17 parkrunners recorded new Personal Bests.

As always we would like to thank the volunteers who made this event happen, without parkrunners giving up their time (and possibly their weekly parkrun), we would not be able to hold the event: Agnieszka BANAS, Andy BRUCKNER, John CHEAL, Caroline CHENARD, Jessica CLENDENNING, Celine CONJARD, Nigel DAWSON, Julie WATKINSON.

Another five records toppled this week.  A shout out to Mark Dyson who has broken the record for VM50-54 for the third time with 21:06.  The other records to fall were:

  • VM35-39 Pablo DIAGO 18:09
  • SW30-34 Charmaine CHAN 25:24
  • SM18-19 Miles PARIS 21:52
  • JM11-14 Taichi YAMASHITA 20:18

You can see the full list of age-category records at http://www.parkrun.sg/westcoastpark/results/agecategoryrecords/ .
