Run report #9 West Coast Park parkrun 28.01.2017

With so many people away enjoying time with family and friends, it was lovely to see a turn out of sixty-three parkrunners to our special event for Chinese New Year; Event #9 of West Coast Park parkrun.  We had twenty-six first timers to parkrun which is really pleasing.  Please spread the word and remember parkrun is for everyone and as parkrun likes to say "Whether you’re young or old, male or female, fit or unfit, able-bodied or not, you’re always welcome. It’s not about racing, it’s about running."

We had visitors from Canada whose family and friends from Singapore ran with them and also a big new contingent of staff from the Australian International School with the person persuading them to come being gently teased that he wasn't running with them, but volunteering is always a noble excuse.  Thanks to the volunteer team of Anand Thiagarajan, Anna Koh (who stepped in at the last moment to help), Bertrand Czarny (who got switched between so many roles as we filled shortages, it must have made his head spin), Bradley Cronje, John Cheal, Rich Neish, Yolande van der Schyff and Zoe Hancock (who rescued some parkrunners that got lost).

Another three records toppled this week. Well done to

  • Creighton Connolly who broke the male course record in 17:22 (SM25-29)
  • Lorena Ferreira age category VW50-54 in 27:01
  • Miles Paris age category SM18-19 in 22:03.

Five IMPORTANT things to tell potential first timers among your friends:

1. Register and print off a barcode a day or two before your first event. No barcode unfortunately means no time will be recorded.

2. Stick to the left of the path during the event and be mindful of other path users.

3. All parkrunners volunteer. Parkrun relies on volunteers to stage each event.

4. Have fun. You are only competing against yourself. Everyone's a winner at parkrun.

5. ... and don't forget to bring your PRINTED barcode !!
